Arak
Arak, formerly Sultanabad, in Iran has a carpet weaving history spanning several centuries, becoming a major production center by the 19th century. Under the Qajar dynasty, the city and its bazaar developed into a hub for Persian carpets. In the late 19th century, Western demand led Ziegler & Co. to establish a manufactory, creating Sultanabad rugs with larger sizes, softer colors, and designs suited for European tastes. Arak is known for distinctive styles including Sarouk rugs with dense knots and vibrant florals, Farahan rugs with fine craftsmanship and harmonious patterns, and Sultanabad carpets tailored for Western markets. Today, Arak remains a vital center for carpet production, with its bazaar supporting authentic Persian rugs, repairs, and custom designs. Arak carpets are celebrated for quality, artistry, and cultural heritage, blending traditional Iranian craftsmanship with global influences.
